Fosamax Side Effects
Fosamax is in a group of medications called bisphosphonates. These drugs can help to slow down bone loss, and help increase bone density. However, recent studies have begun to emerge showing that women taking these drugs for several years suffer an unusual rate of femur fractures. In the May/June 2008 Issue of the Journal of Orthopedic Trauma, researchers found a femur fracture pattern that was 98% specific to users of Fosamax. The study identified a specific type of fracture that occurred almost exclusively in women who had been taking Fosamax over long periods of time. The study reviewed 70 low-energy femur fractures that were typically caused by falls from a standing height or less.
